Things to do in Kos

Explore medieval and Roman ruins, relax on long sandy beaches and dine in traditional Greek tavernas on Kos Island. The third largest island in the Dodecanese impresses with its ancient heritage, laidback beach lifestyle and rural landscapes.

The island’s capital is Kos Town and it is sprinkled with historical treasures. Visit the ancient agora to see the remains of Roman temples and bathhouses. Go to the restored Odeon, a Roman amphitheater that dates from the second or third century.

Walk through the remains of Kos Castle, a massive 14th-century stone fortress. The defensive structure was built by the Knights of Saint John, a Christian military order. Nearby is the Tree of Hippocrates, where Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine is believed to have taught his pupils. According to legend, this is also where St. Paul preached Christianity. Break up your tour of historic sites by sampling some traditional Greek cuisine in a harbor side restaurant.

Drive for about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of the capital to the beautiful hillside village of Kefalos. Stroll among streets lined with traditional houses and tour the remains of an early Christian basilica and a Neolithic cave.

If you have come to Kos for a beach holiday, you won’t be disappointed, because most of the coastline leads to a beach. Close to Kos Town is Agios Fokas Beach with its white and black sand. Relax on Paradise Beach, also known as Bubble Beach for the bubbles that rise up from the sea floor.

Reach Kos by flying into Kos International Airport Hippocrates, located in the center of the island. There are daily flights from Athens and other European destinations. However, most visitors arrive by ferry at the Port of Kos. Daily ferries connect it with other Greek islands, Athens and several cities on the Turkish coast.

Travel to the beaches, towns and historic sites of Kos by renting a car, motorbike or by taking a taxi. Alternatively, rent a bike. There are many paved and dirt cycle paths throughout the island and numerous shops where you can rent road and mountain bikes.
