Lower Alabama Vacation Packages

Get to know the other L.A., where Alabama meets the Gulf of Mexico and a tapestry of heritage and culture unfurls from the historic cities and towns.

Historic port cities, wetlands, beaches and 18th-century architecture: Lower Alabama is an expansive southern region of the state and is rich with early American history. Known as L.A. to those who call it home, the region primarily refers to the southern coast and the wider Mobile Bay area, but also extends along the Floridian border toward Georgia. Spend some time in Mobile, the region’s major city and historic port. Explore sheltered bays and white-sand barrier islands along the gulf or head east to find the rich pastoral counties of Escambia, Montgomery and Houston.

Mobile crowns the top of Mobile Bay, where the rich and fertile wetlands of the Mobile River reach the Gulf of Mexico. Dating back to 1702, the city was the original capital of French Louisiana and offers a fascinating insight into the region’s French, British and Spanish colonial history. Go on a walking tour to see the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, people-watch from the shade at Bienville Square or spot ships sailing along the river from Cooper Riverside Park.

Visit Old City Hall to find the History Museum of Mobile or check out restored naval craft at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. Experience centuries of tradition at Mobile’s annual Mardi Gras parade at the American home of the famous carnival.

On the coast, you’ll find the beach communities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Stay in a seaside condo and spend your days lounging on the white sands and swimming. Take the kids to the adventure parks in Orange Beach or join a deep-sea fishing charter. Try delicious fresh seafood at the waterfront restaurants and stop by the seafood market to pick up fresh shrimp and other local specialties.

Find the rich ecosystems on Dauphin Island on the western side of the bay. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab demonstrates the bay’s different habitats: river delta, Mobile Bay, barrier island and the Gulf of Mexico. Follow the waterway inland toward Lower Alabama’s River Heritage region to discover Civil Rights history and excellent art museums in Montgomery.

Lower Alabama can be reached via regional airports, major interstate highways and express intercity buses. Be prepared for hot and humid summers in this subtropical area.
